The Institute of Clean Technologies (ITL) is a center for innovation and technological development that drives sustainable solutions for industry, especially in mining, energy, and lithium.
Through interconnected technological platforms, the ITL forms a 'Green Mining and Energy' Hyper-Cluster, where different areas synergize and reinforce one another.
Promote the development of green hydrogen through collaboration between academia, industry, and communities, strengthening technological capabilities and fostering competitiveness and partnerships.
History
Foundations
and Origin of the ITL
The ITL was born as part of a strategic agreement between the Production Development Corporation (Corfo) and the company SQM Salar. This agreement, framed within lithium exploitation, establishes a commitment to invest in applied research and development (R&D) to drive a new clean energy and green mining industry in Chile. This investment is considered the largest applied R&D investment in the country's history.
The main objective is to leverage the unique conditions of the Antofagasta Region (high solar radiation, mining resources) to create a sustainable mining-energy cluster that transforms the productive structure and quality of life in northern Chile.
Corfo-SQM Reconciliation Agreement
Corfo commits to promoting innovation and productive development in green mining and clean energies, issuing a call to fund, using SQM funds, the creation and operation of the Clean Technologies Institute.
Implementation Award
After a tender process, the Corfo Council awards the implementation of the ITL to the Association for the Development of the Clean Technologies Institute (ASDIT). This consortium, led by the Corporación Alta Ley, includes numerous Chilean universities, national and international research centers, the country's main mining and energy companies, as well as industrial associations.
Formal Constitution and Statute Signing
This is the most important milestone and the date marking the formal start of ITL's operations. At a ceremony held in Antofagasta, the 24 founding partner institutions and 3 interested institutions signed the statutes governing the Institute's operations.
Strategic Location
The choice of Antofagasta as the headquarters of the ITL is fundamental, as it is the epicenter of mining and renewable energy in Chile, allowing a direct connection with industry and the territory.
Signing of Agreement with Corfo
The formalization of the R&D contribution from Corfo to the ITL allows for the start of the evaluation and selection of research and development projects to be carried out in the thematic areas defined by the industry.

Governance

Composed of seven full members and their respective alternates, responsible for administering the corporation's interests.
A collective body made up of the partners, distributed in different constituencies.
Reports to the Board of Directors and has an oversight role for the ITL's activities.
Advisory body that provides support and technical supervision during the implementation of the strategic plan and its projects.
Advisory body for the strategic coordination of the Institute with other ongoing initiatives and the permanent evaluation of guidelines and results.
Industrial Committee: Advises the project selection process from a market and industry perspective.
Investment Committee: Responsible for the second stage of project selection, establishing prioritization based on technical and economic viability.
